Denture Clinic Services Provided

Complete Dentures

Complete Dentures are made either as replacement for old and worn dentures or as an Immediate Denture or Post-Extraction Dentures. As the name implies, a Complete Denture is for replacement of a complete arch, either or both the upper and lower. Some people retain all or some of the teeth in one arch so will require only a single complete denture. If you have no remaining teeth then complete upper and lower dentures are required. We provide you with the service which suits you best.

Partial Dentures

A partial denture, as the name suggests, is to replace some missing teeth in either or both the upper or lower arch. Sometimes it is required in one arch simply for appearance. More often it is required to improve mastication ability, but if remaining teeth are left unsupported, they may also drift sideways or over erupt making future replacement considerably more difficult.
The other major reason to wear partials is to support an opposing full denture. As an example, where you have a full upper denture and only six remaining lower front teeth – a very common scenario – when you bite on the front teeth of the denture, you will tilt the back of the denture down. Also it is impossible to satisfactorily masticate food without full dentition. At this Denture Clinic we make two types of partial dentures.
  • Acrylic Partials
  • Chrome Cobalt Cast Metal Partials

Denture Repairs

It is important to understand that most commercial glues are not effective or safe to use to repair dentures. The way we repair dentures is to remove a small section of the denture base material and reapply a new section. The acrylic that your denture is made from bonds readily to itself, but commercially available glues are not effective or safe to use in your mouth.
Acrylic dentures can be readily repaired in most cases. It is always simpler and quicker if any broken pieces or loose teeth are retained and brought in at the time of repair.  We understand that you do not want to be without your denture any longer than necessary so we provide a prompt repair service. Where possible, we will have your denture back to you within 1 hour.
Some denture base materials are not repairable or may take several days because of the required repair technique. Consult us for advice.

Denture Relines

A Denture Reline is the placement of an entirely new fitting surface on your denture. This becomes necessary because our mouths are in a constant state of change. Simply gaining or losing weight can have an effect on the shape of our gums. Also, from about age forty, we can use up more bone cells than our body produces, thereby causing our whole body size to alter. Combine all this with the normal wear of your denture from eating and cleaning everyday and you soon realise that all dentures will require relining on a regular basis.
Reline of your upper denture will usually provide more suction, but with the lower, the best you can expect in most cases is simply more stability and less food flowing under the denture. Relining rarely has any effect on the appearance of your denture. Suction on a lower denture is also very rare.

Mouthguards

Anyone who is involved in an activity with a risk of falls or of head contact with other players or equipment should wear one. This includes football, basketball, soccer, hockey and skateboarding. Many people consider football and hockey to be the most dangerous sports for teeth, but many sports-related mouth injuries occur in basketball and soccer as well.
Many DPs and dentists will agree that any mouth guard is better than none, but it is important to choose one that fits comfortably and stays securely in place. It should not be too bulky because that interferes with breathing or speech. Sadly too many mouthguards end up in the players pocket because they do not provide sufficient comfort.
It is important to keep your mouthguard away from heat. Do not leave it in your car or in a bag that is exposed to direct sunlight. It should be rinsed thoroughly after each use and stored in a cool place. Using a mouthwash or denture cleanser will leave a pleasant taste. For sportspeople under 18, it should be replaced annually but for the older sportsperson, you can generally wear it for up to 2 years.
